Until your child is reading independently, without needing your help, the best "homework" you can assist your child with is reading together. This can include the books teachers send home, the books selected at our fabulous school library, or anything at home that both you and your child enjoy.
Aside from academic performance and the literacy development necessary to succeed as an adult, this reading with you will be a special time for your child as they reflect on their childhood in later years. In fact, it was one of my favorite activities to do with my dad!

In first grade, we practice learning words that are common in the books we will be reading. We will also be reading across the rainbow for goal setting and student engagement purposes. There will be a variety of games and activities related to mastering these words, and more information is to come on these games.
We will begin instruction with the Red Word List. It is provided below. There are 2 lists per color because we have a lot of words to learn in 1st Grade! |
